International LGBT Pride day

Ahead of International LGBT Pride Day, IKEA has launched an inspiring digital film called “The Closet.” This campaign, created by Leo Burnett, highlights the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community and encourages everyone to be more inclusive and compassionate. The main message is simple: “Closets are for clothes, not identities.”

The film is set in a busy IKEA store, where a closet in the center poses a thought-provoking question to shoppers: “Many have lived here, can you?” When curious customers step inside, they are met with silence and a pair of headphones replaying the biases LGBTQIA+ individuals hear even today. This powerful experience leaves customers with a profound realization – while they can leave the closet, many LGBTQIA+ people cannot due to societal prejudices.IKEA’s message this Pride Month is clear: “Let the silence in the closet spark a conversation.”

The film urges viewers to understand the invisible walls created by biases and to imagine the struggle of living in a space where expressing one’s true self is a constant battle. The goal is to foster empathy and acceptance, creating homes and a world of understanding and love.

Anna Ohlin, IKEA India’s country marketing manager, emphasized IKEA’s commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community. She stated, “At IKEA, we celebrate love, diversity, and inclusion. Authenticity is a gift to cherish, not something to hide. With this film, we aim to raise awareness and inspire true allyship in society.”Pravin Sutar, national creative director at Leo Burnett Orchard, added, “With ‘The Closet,‘ we want to glimpse the uncomfortable world many LGBTQIA+ individuals experience. It’s a reminder to build a more accepting and loving world where no one has to hide their true self. We hope this sparks meaningful conversations and actions.”

The impact of IKEA’s video has been profound, with one user commenting, “Powerful concept IKEA India, very impressive,” and another adding, “Wow! What a conversation and an important one for sure.” Through “The Closet,” IKEA continues to champion inclusivity and support for the LGBTQIA+ community, encouraging everyone to be true allies.
